FLATS FISHING IN THE TURKS AND CAICOS
The Turks and Caicos Islands are a great spot for flats fishing although they aren’t as commonly known for this type of fishing as are some of our neighbours, such as the Bahamas. What makes flats fishing in the Turks and Caicos so unique is that you are able to fly fish for the elusive bonefish right from land and you don’t necessarily require a guide to take you out.
There is quite a skill required to flats fish in the Turks and Caicos due to the windier conditions that are found in these islands. You’ll likely have to practice your ability to cast downwind and try some different equipment before you will master this sport here.
What are Bonefish?
Bonefish are known to live in warm coastal waters which is why they love to call our islands home! They live in shallow waters meaning that they are typically close to shore or in other flat areas. Bonefish get their name because of the hundreds of small bones that make up their skeleton which makes them more difficult to eat, although they are still an edible fish. Often, anglers consider bonefishing more of a sport for catch and release.
Bonefish are silver in colour making them difficult to see in the waters. They blend in beautifully with their surroundings. It’s not unusual in the Turks and Caicos Islands to catch bonefish that are between 8 and 11 lbs and they are often found swimming in schools of up to 2000 fish!
Other Types of Fish
While bonefish are the most common, the Flats are also home to a large variety of other sport fish such as the barracuda, snapper, jacks and sharks. Working with one of our tour operators, we can show you some of the best places to find these species.
Excellent Locations
There are a number of beautiful areas throughout the islands including areas along the Long Beach on the south side of Providenciales or along Venetian Road on Turtle Tail, which is also on the South Side. While Providenciales is perhaps the best location for Flats Fishing, there have been some great catches noted through the North and Middle Caicos.
